1. Press menu button to bring up the menu
2. Wrench menu: reset all settings (bottom of wrench menu, OK button has to be used to confirm)
3. Turn camera off
4. Turn camera back on
5. Camera menu: Image quality: NEF (RAW)
6. Camera menu: ISO sensitivity settings: 3200
7. Camera menu: White balance: Direct sunlight
8. Camera menu: High ISO NR: Off
9. Camera menu: Vignette control: Off
10. Wrench menu: Time zone and date: UTC
    1. Time zone: UTC 0
    2. Date and time: set date and time to UTC date and time to within a second
    3. Date format: Year/Month/Day
    4. Press left on joypad or menu button to go back to wrench menu
11. Hold mode button (left hand dial) and scroll with right thumbwheel to M(manual) mode
12. Scroll right thumbwheel until shutter speed is set to 4"
13. Flip focus mode switch (left hand side of lens mount, near bottom) to M(manual focus)
14. Ensure drive mode is set to S (ring around left hand top dial, press small lock button in front of dial to unlock)
15. Insert XQD card
16. Format card:
    1. Hold left hand format button (bin button) and right hand format button (ISO button) until LCD flashes "For"
    2. Let go and press buttons simultaneously again to format card
    3. Green write activity LED should illuminate briefly
